EBOLA VIRUS: what you should know and do

Ebola virus Disease (EVD) is a viral infection that is present with sudden onset of fever, intense weakness, muscle pain, headache and sore throat. this is followed by vomiting, diarrhoea, internal and external bleeding. with current outbreak of EVD in countries like Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, EVD is threatening to affect the entire West African subregion. the disease has affected so many people with several deaths. Human beings get infected through contact with an infected pteropodidae fruit bats considered as the natural host of EV. the infected person then transmit the virus to other human when they have come in direct contact with their blood and or other body fluids, secretions and also through air (contaminated air).
those infected are infectious as long as their blood and secretions contain illness. the incubation period i.e interval from infection to onset of symptoms varies between 2 to 21 days.
PRECAUTIONS
Some of the precautions to be taken to prevent EVD are:
1. avoid areas in which there are outbreaks or epidemics

3. Since EV is found in human semen, abstaining from unprotected sex is necessary.
4. Avoid sharing needles and other sharp piercing object.
5. Strictly adheres to hand washing and personal hygiene.
6. Visit the nearest health facility for supportive therapy in event of suspected case.
